growing microgreens in phoenix, arizona

Introducing, Phoenix Valley Aquaponics! We were connected via Instagram recently, so I decided to give them a try considering I am currently working on a holistic health diet/lifestyle and trying to reach my health and fitness goals. The greens tasted fantastic so I made a post to share them with others and I received a surprising amount of feedback!

Please enjoy my educational interview with Emmanuel, the owner of Phoenix Valley Aquaponics, below.

When did you start Phoenix Valley Aquaponics?

We've been in business since November of 2020.

What inspired you to start it?

I was overweight for 25 years of my life. I went from 330 pounds to 175 pounds by eating a healthy diet and primarily increasing my leafy green intake. I feel that I've been given a new life and want to share the wealth and secrets to my success with everyone searching for a way to lose weight organically.

What is aquaponics?

A food production system which combines aquaculture and hydroponics whereby the nutrient rich aquaculture water is fed to the hydroponic plant growing area after being passed through a series of filters which is where the nitrifying bacteria converts ammonia into nitrates.

Why are microgreens important?

They're packed with nutrients ranging anywhere from 4 to 40 times more per ounce than their mature counterparts. They also aid in:

1. Reducing the risk of heart disease

2. Contain Anti-Cancer Properties

3.Boost Immune function

4. Anti-Inflammatory

5. Improves eyesight

6.Reduce constipation

7. High in Prebiotics Fiber (Helps ward off digestive ailments)

8. Weight loss

9. Lowers Cholesterol

What dishes do you serve microgreens with?

Just about any and every dish. I personally use them in my smoothies, cold pressed juices, tuna sandwiches, hummus and pita bread, steaks, steak sandwiches, salads, soups, pastas, sushi and tacos just to name a few.

What do you like about Phoenix?

The amazing weather that provides great growing conditions year round for select varieties of greens. I'm also an avid hiker and enjoy all of the wonderful mountain trails in our Valley.

Are there any restaurants that serve your microgreens?

We're currently only serving private chefs in the Valley but hope to establish new business relationships with local restaurants in the near future.
